Capacity Building

One of primary functions of CLAHRCs is to increase the capacity of NHS organisations, public health in Local Authorities and universities to engage with and apply research and to implement research findings into practice.

Trostle’s (1992) definition of Research Capacity Development (RCD) as 
‘a process of individual and institutional development which leads to higher levels of skills and greater ability to perform useful research’ 
also extends to the development of skills and ability to apply relevant useful research to practice. 

RCD should occur at different structural levels to promote change and sustainable development in individuals, teams and organisations (Cooke 2005).  The Research Capacity Strategy describes the way in which RCD is led, supported and encouraged within CLAHRC SY and is based on Cooke’s Research Capacity Building Framework and the Re:Cap study
