Reducing Health Inequalities
There are stark inequalities in health within South Yorkshire. In Doncaster, life expectancy is lower than the national average by 1.5 years for men and 1 for women. People living in poor areas of Barnsley are twice as likely to die prematurely as those living in more affluent areas. Black and Ethnic Minority (BME) communities have higher rates of diabetes and coronary heart disease, but lower uptake of screening and preventative services than other communities.
NIHR CLAHRC funding for Reducing Health Inequalities is addressing health inequalities and improving outcomes by rolling out evidence-based initiatives, using local experience to develop community-based programmes and developing new projects targeting the communities and neighbourhoods with the poorest health outcomes.
